Problems Between a Burglar Alarm & a Modem

Alarm systems need to connect to the software at your alarm company in order to provide status updates on your system. When one of the alarm mechanisms in your house is triggered, it sends a signal to the security company saying that there is a potential problem at your house. However, if the modem is not working properly, your alarm system may not be able to communicate.
  1. Integrated Modem

    • Some burglar alarm systems have an integrated, stand-alone modem that functions as a direct connection between the alarm company and your system. If the connection on this type of modem stops working, you should be contacted by the alarm company. Ensuring that constant connectivity exists between the system and the company is just one of the ways that the security service provider ensures that your system is always active and protecting your home. If the problem cannot be fixed remotely, the security company will typically dispatch a worker to repair the problem.

    Splitters

    • If you use a DSL broadband modem to connect your burglar alarm system to your security company, then the problem may lie in the splitter. This is a small plastic piece that filters the signal delivered over the line so that both Internet and telephone connections can work properly. If the splitter is not working, the signal will not work and it might appear as if your modem isn't connecting properly to the alarm or the Internet. Replace the splitter to see if the problem resolves.

    Automatic Dialing

    • Dial-up modems and burglar alarm systems conflict comes when the alarm system is set to contact the security company when other modem communications are taking place. The alarm company can adjust this setting. If this problem is occurring, a support representative from your alarm company should be able to adjust the alarm system so that it calls the company at a time that doesn't create a conflict.

    Self-Install Problems

    • Self-installation of a DSL connection can create problems with the communication between your alarm and the hard line coming into your house. When the modem attempts to dial out it may disconnect phone calls and online connectivity. If this problem is occurring, a technician needs to install a central filter instead of the in-line filters typically used with DSL self-install kits. This breaks apart the signal into the different components that you need before it reaches any device, including the alarm system.
