Brink's Home Security was one of the most well-known home alarm system brands in the 1990s. It began as the Brink's Company, a company that traveled money and goods, including the Hope Diamond, in armored trucks. In 1983, Brink's created Brink's Home Security and offered burglar alarms at affordable prices. It won a number of Consumer Digest's "Best Buy" awards for its alarm systems. In 2008, it changed its name to Broadview Security, separate from The Brink's Company. In 2010, it was acquired by Tyco and combined with ADT.
ADT was another home alarm company that, similar to Brink's Home Security, gained new customers in the 1990s. ADT's home alarm systems are focused on a Three Points of Protection system, which lets users install alarm receptors in up to three places in a single home. By the mid-'90s, ADT had more than a million customers. In 1997, it was purchased by Tyco.
The Slomin's Shield was one of the more prominent brands of home alarm systems in the 1990s, largely due to its ad campaigns. It featured commercials about families being protected from intruders thanks to their logo, a red shield, that ran on television often. Slomin's began as a general store in Massapequa, New York, in 1923. It evolved into services for homeowners, including heating oil and air conditioners. The company began offering home alarm systems in 1981 and still continues to sell alarm systems, growing into one of the largest family-owned businesses in the U.S. at time of publication.
