How to Troubleshoot the Window Sensor on an ADT Alarm

ADT home and business security systems often come with window sensors that will trigger the alarm if the window is broken or if someone opens it. Occasionally, there may be a few malfunctions with the sensor that are triggering your alarm or not allowing you to activate it. A few tips can help you determine whether the sensor is not working properly or if it just needs minor maintenance.

Instructions

    • 1

Review the alarm keypad’s display screen. Look for any error codes that pertain to that sensor. If error codes are displayed for that window sensor’s zone, call ADT and inquire whether you should bypass the zone temporarily or if a repair technician is available to review the sensor.

    • 2

Examine the window sensor. Wipe off dust or pet hair that may be blocking the sensor.

    • 3

Open and close the window to ensure that the window is closed properly.

    • 4

Push the “RESET” button on the keypad once you have cleaned the sensor or ensured that the window is closed properly.

    • 5

Perform a system test to evaluate whether the system is working properly. Close all windows, doors and other system entry points. Press the "Test" button on the system and listen for the test sound. Open each window one by one, then check the display and listen for the 3-beep test sound. If no confirming sound is heard or problems persist, contact ADT for repair of the problem.
