Troubleshooting an ADT Alarm's Chirping Testing Button

A home burglar alarm assures security and safety within your home -- as long as it is functioning properly. ADT is a common name in home security. If your ADT alarm system makes a chirping sound when you press the test button, it should be simple to troubleshoot. The sound can be signaling several different scenarios. Instructions

    • 1

Examine the keypad's screen for flashing lights. If a door or window with a sensor is open while you trg to arm the ADT system, the open door or window may create a chirping noise. Look for the zone number on your system and walk over to that area of your home. Close the door or window. Wait for the motion detector to turn off, then attempt to arm the system again.

    • 2

Press the cancel button twice if the system is chirping when you are not trying to arm it. This resets the keypad for some models. Look for flashing lights of any open zones and check to ensure they're securely closed.

    • 3

Press the "OFF" button for some ADT system models. Press "*" to reset the system. Observe any message on the screen.

On other models, enter your master secret code. Then, press "Command" to check the alarm. If the alarm screen says "Alarm Silence?," press "Select." This should stop the chirping sound.

    • 4

Press the "Cancel" button twice if you had a recent power outage to your entire home. If the beeping continues after 24 hours, the panel battery may need changing. The screen may also state, "SYSTEM LO BATTERY" or "BAT."

    • 5

Contact ADT to place your system on "test" while you change the battery. Unlock your control panel near the keypad. Depending on the model, the battery is either a "4 Ah" battery or a "7 Ah" battery.

    • 6

Remove the black wire from the old battery by pulling it off with a pair of pliers. Pull off the red wire from the battery. Take the old battery out of the control panel.

    • 7

Place the new battery in the same location as the old battery. Push the red wire into the new battery's red terminal, which says "+." Push the black wire into the new battery's black terminals, which says "-."

    • 8

Examine the keypad. If the new battery is working properly, the screen is clear. Lock the control panel. Contact ADT to remove the system from the "test" mode.
