How to Program an Alarm System

Alarm systems are programmed with specific codes given to, or selected by, the user in order to arm and disarm. The code can be anywhere between five to ten numbers. A system cannot be solely programmed by the owner in order to prevent tampering and must be done with the knowledge and help of the company that monitors the system. The company can access the system from their monitoring location and the code can be changed only when they set the system to be programmed.

Instructions

    • 1

Call the company and ask to speak to a technician that can help with programming (the owner's manual may have this number listed). Tell the technician your address.

    • 2

Answer the technician's verification question to ensure that you are the owner. The question may be a social security number, or a predetermined question set up during the time of installation.

    • 3

Follow directions from the technician after verifying identity. Enter the current code into the system interface when asked (this may need to be done twice). Enter the new code to be programmed in when the technician prompts. Press "Enter" when finished. Stay on the line with the technician and test the new alarm code to ensure proper function.
