How to Troubleshoot a Deadbolt Lock Bolt Latch

Standard door locks using spring bolts do not cut it when it comes to effective home security. Often, they're too flimsy and easy to break for a front or back door. A deadbolt lock is much more effective. It has a solid bolt that extends from the lock only when the key is turned. A deadbolt lock is only as effective as its installation, however. Problems with the deadbolt may arise if the door is misaligned or the bolt cannot gain clearance into the door jamb.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the door and insert the key into the deadbolt. Turn the key to ensure you have proper bolt action. Spray graphite into the key hole and try again if the bolt is stuck.

    • 2

Close the door once the bolt is moving properly and try engaging the lock. If it doesn't insert into the door jamb, move to the next step.

    • 3

Inspect the door to ensure it is sitting straight. Look at the hinges. If needed, remove the hinges with a screwdriver and adjust them up, down, left or right so that the door sits straight in the door jamb. Reattach the screws through the holes in the hinge with a partner holding the door in place to ensure it is straight and that the deadbolt lock lines up with the lock hole in the door jamb.

Loosen the screws for the bolt strike plate. Adjust the strike plate so that the bolt can insert freely into the door jamb.
