How to Add Methanol to an LP Tank

Water in your liquefied petroleum propane tank can be a significant problem. As winter approaches and the temperature drops, water can become separated from the propane solution, forming a separate layer in the tank that can freeze up and get into your valves and regulators. To prevent this from happening, you can inject your tank with a small amount of methanol. However, proper care must be taken when adding methanol to prevent injury and damage to the tank.

Things You'll Need

  • Methanol injection container
  • Full propane tank
  • Butyl rubber gloves

Instructions

    • 1

Place the nozzle of the hose of the methanol injection container firmly into the injection valve of the propane tank.

    • 2

Inject an amount of methanol equal to 1/20 oz. per gallon of volume in your propane tank. For a standard consumer propane tank of 4.7 gallons, this will be equal to approximately 1/4 oz. The amount you inject will be indicated on the side of your methanol injection container.

    • 3

Remove the hose from the injection valve and inspect the tank to ensure that no liquid has spilled out onto the side of the tank. If it has, clean it off with a thick paper towel and dispose of it immediately.
