How to Keep Rug Stair Treads From Moving Around

Carpeting the stairs helps prevent wear patterns from foot traffic traveling up and down the steps. As you prepare to cover stairs with carpet, you must keep the rug stair treads from moving around. Using special adhesive strips designed for securing a rug, you can prevent accidents from loose carpeting and make your stairs soft and cushioned for the family's comfort.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of the stair treads.

    • 2

Clean the stair treads by wiping them with the cloth to remove any surface dirt and dust.

    • 3

Cut pieces of the rug grip adhesive that are 1 inch shorter than the width of the stair treads. You need enough adhesive pieces to cover the surfaces of each tread.

    • 4

Position a grip adhesive piece onto the bottom stair tread along the nose of the tread with the sticky side facing down.

    • 5

Cut a second piece of adhesive to fill in the remaining surface area of the tread and position it along the first adhesive piece.

    • 6

Remove the adhesive backing from the adhesive pieces and press the rug onto the adhesive.

    • 7

Repeat the same process with each stair tread to secure the rug to each tread.
