How to Make Single Pearl Hair Pins

A single pearl on the tip of a hair pin adds subtle glamor to any hairstyle. Pearl hair pins can be especially beautiful when attaching a wedding veil to a bridal hairdo, and the beaded accent disguises the tips of the pins. There are two methods for securing pearls to hair pins. Gluing the pins is quick and inexpensive, but the decorations may not be as secure. This and the possibility of visible glue makes this method better suited for stage and costume hair pins. Wiring the beads to the pins results in a long-lasting, elegant hair accessory.

Instructions

  1. Simple Pins

    • 1

Dab a small dot of glue from a hot glue gun on the bend of your hair pin.

    • 2

Quickly place a pearl bead on the glue. Hold in place until the glue is set to keep the pearl from shifting out of position.

    • 3

Trim any threads of glue off of the pin and allow the glue to cool and set completely before inserting the pin into your hair.

    Wired Pins

    • 4

Insert a strand of jewelry wire through the bend of the hair pin in the same fashion as you might thread a needle. Leave 1 inch of wire exposed on the left side and the remainder on the right side of the pin.

    • 5

Wrap 1 inch of wire clockwise up and around the bend of the hair pin three times. You will create three loops around the top of the pin, pulling the wire tightly each time. These loops will hold the wire in place. If you have wire left over after wrapping it three times, you may either add additional loops or snip the remainder off with a pair of nail clippers.

    • 6

Thread the pearl bead onto the wire on the right side of the pin. Wrap the thread loosely counterclockwise around the top of the pin and position the pearl. When the pearl is in place, loop the wire through the bend of the hair pin and pull the wire taut.

Wrap the wire in three small loops around the top hair pin bar. When the loops are tight, snip off the remainder of the wire. Dab a drop of beading glue onto a toothpick, then spread the glue over the wire loops to keep them from coming undone and to prevent the ends from catching in your hair.
