How to Use High-Voltage Gloves With Hot Sticks

Hot sticks are devices usually made from fiberglass which detect electrical current. The hot stick will sound when it is near the current, so you don't have to touch the stick to the item in question. Hot sticks are usually used by rescue workers and first responders to check whether there is a chance of electrocution when working to save survivors. High-voltage gloves are rubber gloves that prevent electrical and rescue workers from begin shocked by electrically charged items. Use the two items in conjunction when there is a chance of electrocution.

Instructions

Insert the 4 AAA batteries into the battery bay of the hot stick. Turn the hot stick on and wait for the automatic diagnostic test to run. Keep the hot stick on while you are working.

    • 2

Don high-voltage gloves when working in areas that are known to contain dangerous voltage. Place leather work gloves over the rubber ones to prevent punctures or rips.

    • 3

Take the hot stick in your gloved hand and walk around the perimeter of the area, checking for any electrical current. When approaching an electrical current, the hot stick will beep and an LED light will flash as a warning of the potential danger. Continue to scan the area with the hot stick until you are sure that it is safe to proceed.
