How to Fasten a Bookcase to a Wall

Bookcases filled with books present a safety issue in many ways. Even if the bookcase isn't unstable somebody could knock it over or an earthquake could topple it. Fix this safety hazard by securing your bookcase to the wall. Choose a location that won't require you to move the bookcase soon.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate studs in the wall where you want to fasten your bookcase with a stud finder. Follow the directions that came with your stud finder. Locate two studs that are parallel to each other, either 16 or 24 inches apart.

    • 2

Look for other signs of a stud if you don't own a stud finder. Locate nails on your baseboards. These are commonly nailed into studs. Insert a 10d finish nail into the wall above a nail on the baseboard at about the height you'll screw your bookcase into the wall. If the nail is secure, you've found a stud.

    • 3

Measure 16 inches to the left or right of the first stud you found. Nail a 10d finish nail into the wall. If you don't find a stud, measure 14 inches from the first stud. Most studs are spaced 16 or 24 inch apart.

Make a small mark on your wall above the height of your bookcase to indicate the placement of each stud. Line the bookcase so it covers both studs.

    • 5

Measure the thickness of the back of the bookcase. Add 1/2 inch to this measurement and use screws that long.

    • 6

Place the bookcase flat against the wall. Put six screws into the bookcase. Three screws line up with the left stud and three with the right. Place one screw in the top, middle and bottom of each side. Use more screws if you think they are necessary.
