How to Change the Code on an Electronic Door Lock

Several models of electronic door lock use a short numeric code instead of a key to limit access to those authorized. You should periodically change the entry code for each lock to reduce the chances of someone gaining access to your protected area. Changing the code is designed to be easy for those authorized to program the lock. Every lock is different. Some instructions may vary when applied to your model.

Instructions

    • 1

Enter the programming code supplied with the lock or remove the cover and press the "Program" button. The programming code is often supplied among the documentation when you purchase the lock.

    • 2

Enter a the new code you would like to use into the control panel. The length of the code depends on the system but it is usually between four and eight digits. Keep a backup copy of the code noted in a safe place.

    • 3

Enter the code a second time, if necessary, to make sure you did not make any mistakes. Some systems accept a new code after one attempt, indicating successful programming with a beep. You might need to press a button to confirm the new code, such as "Lock," for example.

    • 4

Put the cover back on the lock and try the new code. The digits should unlock the door in the same way as your previous code.
