How to Replace a Genie Garage Door Remote

Since 1995, the Genie garage door opener company has added Intellicode technology to its systems. Instead of repeatedly using the same entry code, Intellicode openers automatically synchronize a new combination with the remote with every opening. You might need to replace a Genie remote if you lose the one supplied with the system; people often need a replacement remote if their car is stolen. Configuring a replacement remote to work with your opener follows a straightforward procedure.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a suitable replacement remote from your local authorized dealer or an online retail outlet (see Resources).

    • 2

Press and hold the "Program/Set" button on the opener's power head until both LEDs next to the button glow blue.

    • 3

Release the "Program/Set" button to make the long LED stay blue. Press "Program/Set" again to make the LED flash purple.

    • 4

Hold the "Up" and "Down" buttons (marked "-" and "+") together until both LEDs flash blue. Stop holding the buttons. All previous remote codes have been cleared from the memory.

    • 5

Press and hold the "Program/Set" button on the opener's power head until both LEDs next to the button glow blue to begin programming the new remote.

    • 6

Release the "Program/Set" button to make the long LED stay blue. Press "Program/Set" again to make the LED flash purple.

    • 7

Press the button on the new remote that you want to use to operate the opener to make both LEDs flash purple.

    • 8

Press the remote button a second time to make both LEDs flash blue and go out. The new remote is now ready for use with your opener.
