Low VOC Paints

• One alternative to traditional paints is to use low VOC paints, which use water-based solvents instead of dangerous petroleum-based solvents; therefore, they release fewer VOCs into the air. These paints also have either trace or no amounts of heavy metals and formaldehyde. While low VOC paint is unlikely to produce chemical sensitivities or allergies, and does not give off an odor when dry, it is important to note the paint can sometimes cause sensitivities and allergies when wet. Those who have allergies or chemical sensitivities are encouraged to buy the lowest VOC paints possible to avoid possible complications or discomfort while painting.

No VOC Paints

• The name "no VOC" paints, also commonly referred to as zero VOC paints, is somewhat misleading. Though these paints are termed no or zero VOC paints, they actually do still contain and emit some VOCs. In order to be classified as no or low VOC, however, paints cannot contain more than five grams of VOCs per liter. For best results, those who use no VOCs paints want to avoid products containing colorants, biocides and fungicides, which can add to the VOCs count.

Natural Paints

• The type of paint most commonly recommended by environmental activists is natural paint. As the name implies, these paints are made from all natural ingredients. The most common include water, plant products and natural minerals. Natural paints emit absolutely no VOCs, making them incredibly safe for use around humans, and perfect for atmospheres where a high air quality is necessary, such as in hospitals or schools.

VOC Absorbing Paints

• Some people prefer to use VOC absorbing paints, which contain the same level of VOCs as regular paints. The difference, however, is that these paints absorb the VOCs, thus keeping them from being released into the air and breathed in by those who come into contact with the paint and its vapors. The different types of VOC absorbing paints include atmosphere purifying wall paint, MDF passivating primer and antiformaldehyde radiator paint. Not all types of VOC absorbing paints are suitable for all paint jobs. Therefore, it is important to carefully select the correct paint when using VOC absorbing paints.
