How to Adjust a Garage Door Close Limit Switch

Now common to many modern homes, garage door openers have taken the effort out of storing the car for the night. When the opener is installed, it does not know how far to lower the door before it strikes the ground; setting the limit switches tells the computer when to stop after the "Close" button has been pressed. You might find your door stays slightly open or strikes the ground and reverses if the close limit switch isn't configured properly.

Instructions

Test the door by pressing the "Close" button and watch what happens. The door will either fail to reach the ground or hit the floor and reverse.

    • 2

Stand on a stepladder to reach the garage opener powerhead and locate the limit switches. They are usually marked with an upward or downward arrow.

    • 3

Turn the close limit switch with a screwdriver counterclockwise if the door does not reach the floor, clockwise if it hits the ground and reverses. Every complete turn represents approximately 5 inches of downward travel.

Test your adjustments by opening and closing the door. Don't worry if the opener stops working after a few tests; wait 15 minutes for the motor to cool down and try again. Make any additional changes based on your observations until the door reaches the ground and stays closed.
