Test the garage door with its current settings and make a note of how the door behaves. The door could reverse before the ground, stop before the top or retreat upward after closing for a few seconds.
Stand on a ladder beneath the opener's motor head and locate the travel adjustment screws. The travel controls are typically marked with an up and down arrow icon.
Adjust the up dial clockwise with a screwdriver if the door failed to reach the top during the test. Each full revolution adds about 5 inches of upward travel distance.
Turn the down dial clockwise if the door reached the ground then returned to the top; the travel setting was set too far. Turn the dial counterclockwise if the door failed to reach the ground. As above, each turn adds or removes 5 inches of travel.
Activate the opener and see how the new settings work. You may need to adjust the travel dials a few times before you find the right settings.
