How to Get Rid of an Icy Driveway

Winters can be dangerous, especially with the snow that can turn to ice on roads, sidewalks and driveways. If you don’t want to melt the ice with salt or harsh chemical treatments that can harm your lawn or concrete driveway, you can use an eco-friendly material that will melt the ice. The material is safe for the environment and will not damage concrete.

Instructions

    • 1

Collect the fire ash from your fireplace, outdoor fire pit or from a neighbor or friend. Keep the wood ash in a sealed container so it stays dry.

    • 2

Use a scoop or a shovel to spread a thin layer of wood ash over the ice on the driveway. Sprinkle the ash as you would salt. It doesn’t need to cover the ice completely.

    • 3

Wait 24 hours before you use an ice chopper to chop or scrape away the remainder of the ice. The remaining ice will be soft and easy to shovel or push with the ice chopper.
