How to Construct a Primitive Door Lock

Primitive door latches are usually sliding bolts or hooks that have no internal mechanical parts like a standard lock would. These locks are useful for shed doors, fences, inside doors and doors that have only one way to go through. Constructing a primitive door lock is not a difficult task. It can be done with basic tools and just a small amount of time. A barrel bolt latch is a common example of a primitive lock.

Stand flat and look forward to the place where you plan to install the lock. Mark the placement of the lock at eye-level with a pencil or marking pen.

Place the latch against the door and situate it so the latch sits is on the edge of the door facing to the left. Attach the lock with the included screws using a screwdriver. Do not tighten the screws down all the way.

    • 3

Attach the receiving piece of the latch on the edge facing the door. Do not tighten the screws down all the way.

Close the door and line up the latch by closing the latch together. Tighten all of the hardware all the way down when you are sure that everything lines up and functions in the correct manner.
