How to Install a Hand Turning Deadbolt Lock

Deadbolt locks can have a single lock cylinder or a double lock cylinder. A double-cylinder deadbolt can only be opened or closed -- whether from the outside of the door or inside -- with a key. This type of lock may be resistant to thieves, but there is a safety issue: being able to exit the home in a hurry during an emergency without fumbling with a key. A single-cylinder deadbolt may be more desirable in an emergency, as it is keyed on the outside of the door, but has a thumb-turn that can be opened by hand on the inside.

Instructions

  1. Remove Existing Lock

    • 1

Open the door to access both sides of the lock easily. Remove the retaining screws from the lock cylinder face plate on the inside of the door with a Phillips screwdriver.

    • 2

Pull both halves of the lock from either side of the door

    • 3

Remove the screws from the face plate in the door lock latch assembly on the leading edge of the door.

    • 4

Pull the latch assembly out of the edge of the door horizontally.

    Install Single-Cylinder Deadbolt

    • 5

Measure the distance from the edge of your door to the middle of the hole where the lock will be installed, which is referred to as the offset. Ensure the latch mechanism that you will be installing has the same offset measurement as your door.

    • 6

Insert the latch mechanism into the hole in the leading edge of the door with the word “UP” facing upwards. Twist the two retaining screws into the mounting holes in the face plate of the latch and tighten them with a Phillips screwdriver.

    • 7

Insert the ring-shaped metal trim plate over the cast metal lock cylinder housing. Insert the lock cylinder through the large hole in plate and housing until it is fully seated. Orient the lock cylinder so that the name on the face of the cylinder is facing upwards and the flat part of the key -- when inserted into the lock -- is facing downwards.

    • 8

Hold the lock cylinder in the correct orientation and insert the tail piece on the rear of the cylinder through the hole in the latch assembly from the outside surface of the door. Hold the cylinder in this position. Line up the hole in the back side of the thumb-turn assembly to the tail piece of the lock cylinder, from the inside surface of the door, and push it into place. Rotate the face plate of the thumb-turn so that it is facing upwards -- usually indicated by an arrow or brand-name on the plate.

    • 9

Insert the two long screws through the mounting holes in the thumb-turn faceplate and into the threaded holes in the back side of the lock cylinder. Tighten the screws with a Phillips screwdriver. Test the operation of the lock.
