Change water in the fountain frequently. Mosquitoes always breed in areas with standing water that is not frequently disturbed, so simply circulating the water in your fountain is one of the most effective ways of discouraging adults mosquitoes from hovering and breeding in the fountain water.

Use a mosquito larvicide in the fountain water. Larvicides typically contain methoprene or Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) as active ingredients. Purchase a larvicide that is designed for use in fountain water and apply it according to the manufacturer's directions. Check the fountain water after applying to confirm a reduction in mosquito activity.

Remove water from the fountain or remove the fountain altogether. This may seem like a drastic step, but if the above steps do not succeed in removing mosquitoes from your fountain, the mosquitoes are likely to continue breeding there. If mosquito control is more important than the aesthetic value of the fountain, removing the water from the fountain or removing the fountain altogether is the most effective way to guarantee a reduction in mosquito populations in and around the fountain.
