DIY Install Window Locks

Window locks can serve a dual purpose in your home. You may want to install them as a means to keep people from entering the home or to keep children from going out of windows. No matter their purpose, window locks can offer peace of mind. There are many types of windows and locks on the market, but a common keyed window lock that is fairly easy to install can illustrate their use.

  • Screw-down clasp-style keyed window lock set
  • Marking pen or pencil
  • Nail
  • Hammer
  • Screwdriver

      Inspect your window and locate the center point to attach your lock. Note that wood-framed windows can have locks installed along their sides and not just at the bottom.

      Position the receiver and clasp of your lock on the center point and mark their hole placements on the window with a marker or pencil.

      Use a 1-inch nail and hammer to place pilot holes where you will screw down the receiver.

      Position the clasp of your lock on the center point and mark its hole placement on the window with a marker or pencil.

      Use a 1-inch nail and hammer to place pilot holes where you will screw down the clasp.

      Screw down both the receiver and the clasp. Test the lock to make sure that it aligns correctly and that the key functions correctly. Make adjustments as needed.
