How to Clean Nomex

Nomex is a flame-resistant fabric used to produce protective clothing for industrial workers, race car drivers and firefighters. Due to extreme conditions or high heat, Nomex fabric needs to be washed regularly. Most cleaning products are safe to use with Nomex as long as they are completely removed during rinsing.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any stains or oils before washing by pretreating with laundry detergent or another bleach-free cleaner. If stains or oil spots are severe, professional dry cleaning may be needed.

    • 2

Wash and dry the Nomex fabric separately from other fabrics. The lint from other fabrics can be flammable and reduce the flame-retardant qualities of Nomex.

    • 3

Wash in hot water, but below 140 degrees Fahrenheit, with any typical consumer laundry detergent. Do not use chlorine bleach or detergents that contain bleach as this will destroy the flame-retardant properties of the Nomex fabric.

    • 4

Dry normally, but take care not to over-dry the fabric. Use a short timer and check the dryness regularly. When Nomex fabric is only slightly damp, you can remove it and air-dry.

    • 5

Do not use starch on Nomex, as starch is flammable.
