How to Install a Double Entry Deadbolt Lock

A double entry deadbolt lock features a keyhole on both sides of the door, with the bolt hidden between the two pieces of lock trim. There is no thumb turn on this type of deadbolt; a key is required for operation. A double entry deadbolt allows you to engage the bolt from either side of the door, increasing security on both sides of the door. Installation is similar to any other type of deadbolt lock.

Instructions

    • 1

Tape the lock template to the door panel and edge at the desired distance from the floor. Tape the strike plate template to the trim directly opposite the lock location. Mark the center of the lock holes on the front and edge of the door with an awl. Remove the lock template.

    • 2

Fit an electric drill with a hole saw blade in the correct size for the front lock hole as indicated by the template. Drill a hole straight through the door. Fit the drill with a drill bit the size of the deadbolt as indicated by the template and drill through the door edge until the two holes meet. Clear all sawdust from the hole.

    • 3

Insert the lock cylinder and attached edge plate into the hole in the door edge. Secure the edge plate to the door edge with mounting screws and a Philips screwdriver.

    • 4

Locate the side of the keyhole trim with a screw inserted into the interior of the mechanism. Remove the screw and insert the keyhole and trim into the exterior side of the hole. Insert the screw through the open side of the lock and into the hole in the assembly from which it was removed. Tighten the screw.

    • 5

Insert the other side of the lock until it clicks into place. Secure with trim screws if applicable.

    • 6

Trace the outline of the strike plate against the door trim with a utility knife. Drill a hole 3/4 inch into the center of the strike plate hole. Chisel the wood between the hole and the strike plate outline to a depth of 3/8 inches or according to manufacturer's specifications. Insert the strike plate and secure it with trim screws and a Philips screwdriver.
