How to De-ice Metal Stairs

Metal stairs can become extremely slick during the winter months, especially when snow gets stepped on repeatedly and condenses into ice. Chemical ice melt does a fine job of breaking up ice on sidewalks and driveways made of concrete, but most are not appropriate for metal. Use an ice melt specifically formulated to be safe on metal to ensure the stairs will be safe for people and will retain stability and integrity.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any snow from the metal stairs with a broom or snow shovel. Expose the ice underneath for easier removal.

    • 2

Spread an ice melt specially formulated to be safe on metal. Shake the granules in thin, even layers over the iced steps. Allow it to sit for 15 minutes.

    • 3

Start at the top step, and loosen the ice from the metal surface using the tip of a snow shovel. Scoop up the slush and toss it aside.

    • 4

Work your way down the metal staircase until each step is cleared of ice.
