How to Remove Ice From a Driveway Gate

When an ice storm hits your area, you may find it difficult to get in and out of your driveway when your chain link rolling gate is frozen. These gates slide back and forth over the driveway using a wheel and track system and latch shut. In the winter, the moving parts can easily crust with ice, preventing operation. After a storm, take the time to de-ice your driveway gate so you don't bend the latch or the gate frame.

Instructions

    • 1

Brush as much snow and debris away from the latch as you can with a broom or a gloved hand. Clear away snow and debris from the wheel track using a shovel or broom.

    • 2

Spray a commercial de-icer directly onto the gate latch. Apply it from different angles so that the chemicals get into contact with as much ice as possible. Push the latch gently to test whether the ice has melted. Spray more de-ice product as close to the ice blockage as possible.

    • 3

Spray de-icer on the wheels of the driveway gate. Allow the chemicals to sit on the wheels for a few minutes to penetrate the ice.

    • 4

Sprinkle ice melt onto the wheel track to break up any ice that may impede the wheels from sliding smoothly. Allow the ice melt to penetrate for at least 15 minutes. Use the snow shovel to gently break up ice pieces. Shovel ice pieces and slush away so the water won't re-freeze.

Open the driveway gate latch and gently push the gate open. If you meet resistance, use the de-ice spray to melt the ice, then continue to open the gate.
