How to Check the Dryer Vent for Blockage

If you have long dry times, the air in the laundry room feels humid or the dryer doesn’t seem to heat up, you could have a problem with the dryer -- or it could simply be a blockage in the dryer vent. Before you call a repair person for the dryer, you can check to see if your problem is a blocked dryer vent and avoid a costly service call.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the dryer vent hose from the dryer outlet on the lower back of the dryer.

    • 2

Place the panty hose on the dryer vent outlet on the dryer. Use duct tape to secure the nylon to the dryer vent so it doesn’t come off when the dryer starts.

    • 3

Start the dryer using the selector knob. Use a setting that has high heat. You will only run the dryer for one to two minutes during the test.

    • 4

Place your hand on the dryer outlet. If the outlet is hot and hot air and lint are flowing into the nylon, you have a dryer vent blockage.

    • 5

Turn off the dryer and clean out the vent hose or replace it with a new one before operating the dryer again. Check the dryer vent housing that leads to the outside to see if the vent has a blockage as well.
