      Collect wood ash from your fireplace or backyard fire pit during the year. Keep the ash in a container that will protect it from moisture so it will stay dry.

      Mix two parts wood ash and one part sand in a bucket when you have ice to melt.

      Use a scoop to sprinkler a thin layer of wood ash and sand over the ice. The wood ash will melt the snow and the sand acts as traction until the ice melts.

      Wait 24 hours before adding more of the mixture to spots that you may have missed or areas that had a thick ice build-up.
