How to Make Glazed Tile Safe for Children

Slip falls are dangerous because they are so unpredictable. A child who slips on glazed tile and falls down may suffer only mild bruises, but if they fall into a sharp object or hit their head, the injuries could be much greater. Some glazed tiles are sold with a rough finish that creates enough friction to make them naturally slip-proof. To prevent children from slipping and falling on smooth glazed tiles, however, takes some safety measures.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all the movable pieces of furniture and items from the tile floor.

    • 2

Mix a cleaning solution of five parts hot water with a half part tile and surface detergent in a bucket.

    • 3

Mop the tile floor thoroughly using a mop and the cleaning solution. Allow the floor to dry completely.

    • 4

Put on a disposable face mask and latex gloves.

    • 5

Hold the spray can of a non-slip product 4 inches to 6 inches from the floor and squeeze the spray nozzle down to release the product onto the floor. Move the can in smooth lines back and forth over small areas of the floor until the entire floor has been treated with the product. Allow the product to dry overnight.

    • 6

Pour a liquid non-slip tile product into a paint tray. Dip a paint roller into the product and roll it over the floor in large W-shaped strokes to provide complete coverage of the tiles. Allow the product to dry overnight.

    • 7

Reapply the non-slip product after about five years or as indicated on the product packaging.
