How to Childproof My Bathroom Wall Heater

A wall heater affixes to the wall and relies on propane, natural gas or electric to produce heat. Most wall heaters are constructed of durable metal, containing coils or tubes to control heat flow. While some wall heaters remain cool to the touch during operation, others become increasingly hot the longer they run. If you have young children in your home, the thought of a burning-hot wall unit running in your bathroom may be unsettling. Childproofing the wall heater will help quell your fears.

Remove all of the knobs from the wall heater when not in use. Removing the knobs will keep little hands from turning the wall heater on and off, reducing the risk of burns. Simply give the knobs a tug to pull them off. Use a pair of pliers to remove knobs that are a bit more stubborn.

Set up a barrier to keep children away from the bathroom wall heater. If there is enough room, a baby gate surrounding the wall heater will keep children far enough away. The baby gate must be at least 18 inches from the wall heater to ensure safety. Two fireplace grates can be tied together to create a V-shaped barrier in front of a heater.

Fit the radiator with a cover to protect children from intense heat when the wall heater is in use. Contact your wall heater's manufacturer in regards to a cover for your particular model.
