How to Remove Ice From Roof Eaves

Large icicles hanging from the edge of your roof may look picturesque, but they can contribute to plenty of problems. Ice dams and icicles can twist gutters, pull them away, damage shingles and even buckle metal roofs. Knocking ice down with a shovel may cause harm to yourself and your roof. Remove ice from roof eaves using simple methods that melt ice effectively.

Things You'll Need

  • Ice melt sock
  • Non-corrosive ice melt
  • Ladder

Instructions

    • 1

Fill the ice melt sock completely with ice melt and tie it closed.

    • 2

Place the ladder next to the eaves. Carry the ice melt sock up to the roof and lay it over the ice block. Position the sock so it lays with the slope of the roof and so one end of the sock drapes into the gutter. Repeat with more ice melt socks in different areas as needed.

    • 3

Place ice melt discs on the back edge of ice ridges on the eaves. Position the discs so they are touching the ice block. If a pool of water is behind the ice dam, put an ice disc in it so the water becomes infused with chemicals that melt the ice dam.

Check on the ice melt products about every 30 minutes. After the first hour, watch for the ice melt to cut channels into the ice blocks. Eventually, the ice melt will significantly reduce the ice hanging from the roof eaves. Reposition the ice melt sock and discs as necessary.
