How to Childproof the Hinges on Top of Storage Chests

Childproofing the home is a ritual looked upon with as much joy as a trip to the dentist. As your child begins to crawl and eventually pulls to standing, everything that's breakable, dirty, or dangerous needs to be moved or covered up. Hinges are no exception. Exploratory little hands can become pinched in little hinges or caught in bigger ones. Cover them up and protect your child with a simple hot glue gun.

Instructions

    • 1

      Close the chest.

    • 2

Plug in your hot glue gun and allow it to heat up for five minutes. The glue should come out at room temperature and be slightly hard.

    • 3

Drip the hot glue onto the hinge. Drop one large dot on the top of each hinge, covering the top completely. If the hinge is long, cover the top of the length with the hot glue. Do not spread the glue around -- it should be on the top only.

    • 4

Allow the glue to dry for 15 minutes.

    • 5

Open the storage box to insure that the hinge is not frozen. If it is, break the glue off with your fingers and begin again from Step 1.
