The Recommended Hardware for a Mounted Baby Gate Banister

Wall Anchors

• In some cases, the most ideal place to install the mounting plate of your gate that holds the gate in place does not line up with a wooden wall stud. If a search with a stud finder does not find a stud to install the mounting plate into, then you will need to use wall anchors into your drywall. Your child could lean on your gate or shake the gate while holding on to it. Wall anchors will hold the gate safely in place in lieu of a wall stud to attach it to. A gate mounting kit will come with all of the anchors and supplies you need to safely mount the gate into drywall.

Spacers

• Some wall mounting kits and baby gates come with wall spacers, while others do not. If you have baseboards running along the base of your walls, you will need wall spacers to ensure a proper installation. Without spacers, baseboards will cause the wall mounting plate to be uneven. Wall spacers are placed behind the top of the mounting plate to make the plate even. The spacers are wooden so you can easily drill a pilot hole and install the screw through them.

Banister Wraps

• To accommodate something as important as a baby safety gate, most parents do not mind screwing into drywall or the wooden frame of an upstairs doorway. But banisters can be decorative; and most people, understandably, would like to preserve them if possible. Banister wraps allow you to attach the latch side of the baby gate to the banister without having to screw directly into the banister. There are kits for round and square banisters to accommodate your installation project.

Newel Post Mounting Kit

• If your stairs feature a newel post, or if your stairs have banisters on both sides of your baby gate installation, you can use a newel post mounting kit to safely install the mounting plate without damaging your banister or newel post. A newel post mounting kit works in much the same way that banister wraps work; it wraps around the banister, but it is shaped like your mounting plate and runs from the top to the bottom of the newel post. Banister wraps are installed where the latches meet the banister and do not offer the same amount of support that a Newel post mounting kit offers.
