How to Clear a Frozen Roof Vent Pipe

When moist air condenses inside the roof vent stack in cold weather, ice can form at the exit point. When too much ice forms, it can block the vapors and gasses from the sewer system. In extreme cases, the blockage can be dangerous because methane gas can build up in your home. To clear the blockage, you'll have to climb up on the roof. Look for a white vent pipe coming up from the upper floor bathroom area.

Instructions

    • 1

Heat a tea kettle full of water. When it is nearly boiling, pull it off the stovetop and carry it outside.

    • 2

Clear away any snow and ice on the ground and position the ladder carefully. Climb up onto the roof using the ladder, carefully carrying the pot of water. Make a second trip down the ladder and bring up the broom handle.

    • 3

Carefully pour the hot water into the roof vent pipe. Set the teapot down and insert the broomstick into the pipe.

    • 4

Move the broomstick around a few times to loosen any ice. Alternate the hot water and broomstick until the water is gone and the ice has melted.

    • 5

Climb down the ladder carefully, bringing the teapot and broomstick with you.
