How to Set Up Surge Protection

Modern electronic devices such as big-screen televisions and computers can cost thousands of dollars. A lightning strike during a thunderstorm can destroy your sensitive equipment in an instant; but storms are not the only cause of such damage. Power surges happen inside your home on a regular basis and you may not even be aware of these voltage fluctuations. Some electronic devices have built-in surge protection, but this doesn’t always provide adequate protection. To shield electronic equipment more efficiently, install a surge protector. You should also install an uninterruptible power supply for your computer.

Instructions

  1. Set Up a Surge Protector

    • 1

Plug the surge protector into a wall outlet. Do not plug the protector into a power strip or an extension cord, as this will not fully protect the connected equipment.

    • 2

Plug your electronic equipment into the outlets on the surge protector. Some protectors have several outlets that are always on as well as a few that you can switch on and off as needed.

    • 3

Flip the switch or press the "Power" button on the surge protector to turn it on. A glowing light typically indicates when the protector is working.

Set Up an Uninterruptible Power Supply

    • 4

Add up the wattage of all the computer components that you want to connect to the UPS. The total wattage cannot exceed the stated capacity of the UPS.

    • 5

Plug the UPS into a wall outlet and let the battery charge for about four hours.

    • 6

Turn off the computer. Connect all computer components to the outlets on the UPS.

    • 7

Turn on the UPS and then turn on the computer. If software was included with your UPS, install it now.
