How to Get Rid of Ice Dams Causd by My Attic Furnace

Ice dams form at the edges of the roof and block other snowmelt from proper drainage. Many homes have the furnace in the attic, especially if the house has no basement. When the attic is warmed from furnace output, snow melts directly above it on the roof and runs toward the gutter. When the water hits the eaves, the attic underneath is no longer warm, causing the water to freeze and form an ice dam. Water may back up into the roof shingles and leak down into the home, causing water damage.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill the porous ice melt sock with ice melt. Close the Velcro seal at the end so ice melt granules don't spill out.

    • 2

Climb the ladder and place the sock over the ice dam so it lays with one end toward the peak of the roof and the other end draping into the gutter.

    • 3

Place ice melt discs along the ridge of the ice dam. If you can see water pooled behind the ice dam, toss a disc into the water to dissolve.

    • 4

Check on the ice melt sock every 30 to 60 minutes to ensure it's melting a channel into the ice dam. Once the channel is formed, the water behind the ice dam will flow into the gutter. Leave the ice melt sock and discs in place to prevent other dams from forming.
