How to Install Bed Railings for the Elderly

Getting in and out of bed is something many of us take for granted, but it is a process that can be painful and difficult for the elderly. Railings can be installed to aid those who need assistance with sitting and standing. Bed railings are especially crucial for elderly people who spend many daytime hours in bed due to injury or illness. Installing bed railings properly is essential to ensure the user's safety.

Instructions

  1. Preparations

    • 1

Ensure that the railing will support the weight of the individual who will be using it. Also check that it is the appropriate length, as the user will need to move around it to get in and out of bed.

    • 2

Remove all linens from the bed and clear the surrounding area of furniture or other items. You will need space within which to work.

    • 3

Confirm that all the necessary parts are included and that you have the proper installation tools at hand, as applicable.

    Installing

    • 4

Slide the base of the railing, not the handle portion, under the box spring. Push the base in firmly so it is completely under the box spring.

    • 5

Attach the base to the bed frame with the included hardware (for example, screws and washers) or with the safety strap, as applicable. If using a safety strap, ensure that it is fastened tightly around the box spring and bed frame to prevent the railing from coming loose during usage.

    • 6

Stop the installation process if any of the pieces break, as the railing may be defective and therefore unsafe.

    • 7

Step back from the railing and ensure that it is on straight.

    Testing

    • 8

Get into and out of the bed using the railing. Make a note of any potential difficulties the user may have and of any wobbling. Tighten the railing as needed.

    • 9

Lie in the bed and roll to one side, pushing your weight against the railing. If your weight differs drastically from that of the person using the railing, keep that in mind when executing this test. If possible, find someone of a similar size to perform this process as this will test the security of the railing should the user roll-up against it during the night.
