How to Make Nonskid Driveways Happen

The smooth surface of concrete can get quite slippery when moisture is present, whether it's from dew, rain, sleet, ice or snow. Family or guests may slip and fall if they walk on a concrete driveway in smooth-soled shoes. Reduce the risk of slipping by applying a nonskid sealant on your driveway. It only takes a few days to turn a slick driveway into something with more traction.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the driveway using a commercial degreaser and a power washer. Apply the degreaser on any oil spots on the driveway, and let it sit according to the manufacturer's instructions. Use the power washer to get dirt, debris, oil, grease and the degreaser off the cement. Ensure the driveway is as clean as possible before applying the sealant.

    • 2

Pour the sealant in the bucket, and wet the roller mop. Stand on one side of the driveway, and place the sponge into the center, as far in as you can reach. Apply the sealant to the driveway by pulling the mop toward you in long, even strokes.

    • 3

Move slowly down the driveway, rewetting the mop and placing it on the driveway, so the lines just overlap. Work your way down the driveway until you reach the bottom.

    • 4

Move to the opposite side of the driveway and apply sealant to that side. Start at the top of the driveway and work your way down to the bottom. When you finish, look over the entire driveway to ensure there are no unsealed spots. Smooth out any ridges created by drops of sealant.

Allow the sealant to dry completely, usually 24 to 48 hours, before allowing foot or auto traffic on it. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions on drying time.
