How to Baby Poof Against Steam Heaters

New and expectant parents spend hours baby-proofing their home, from specialized toilet seat and outlet covers to drawer latches and staircase baby gates. One place that is often overlooked is the steam heater, or radiator. During the colder winter months the radiator can run hot enough to provide anywhere from a minor irritation to a serious burn on a baby or toddler’s delicate skin. Protect your child from a boo-boo by baby-proofing your steam radiator.

Instructions

    • 1

Install a radiator cover over the unit. These wooden boxes, available at hardware and home improvement stores, keep little fingers away from the radiator while providing even heat distribution

    • 2

Install a hearth baby gate around the radiator. Choose a model that adjusts to irregular shapes and comes equipped with a door to provide easy access by adults.

    • 3

Arrange furniture in front of the radiator. Set the piece at least three to four inches in front of the steam heater to keep curious children away while allowing the heat to circulate throughout the space.

    • 4

Teach older children to keep away from the radiator. Once the child is older than 2, is old enough to learn the radiator is hot and the consequences of touching its surface.
