Drilling for a Door Lock

Increase the security of your home by adding an additional door lock. Installing an extra lock like a swing-bar door guard, which locks from the inside, prevents someone from entering. Swing-bar door guards work similar to door chain locks; instead of a chain, they have a strong brass or steel bar. These types of locks lower the risk of scratching a door frame like a typical chain lock can. Many hotels and motels use swing-bar door guards for an additional level of security.

Instructions

Look over the instructions on the back of the door lock packaging. Note the size of drill bit recommended and insert the correct size into the drill. Use tape to secure the lock plate to the back of the door, about 6 to 8 inches above the door handle. Mark the screw holes with the pencil.

Put on safety glasses to guard against flying piece of wood or metal. Drilling screw holes into the door, then use the screwdriver to insert the screws. Check that the lock plate is secure on the back of the door.

    • 3

Place the door frame side swing-bar mount on the door frame directly across from the lock plate. Fasten the security bar and open the door. Move the swing bar mount further away from the door if the door opens wider than 1 inch. When the swing-bar mount is at the ideal position, tape it to the door frame.

Use the pencil to mark holes for the screws. Drill the holes for the screws and insert with the screwdriver. Wiggle the swing-bar mount to check for looseness. Tighten the screws if needed. Open the door to test the new lock.
