Safety Features on Whirlpool Glass Top Stoves

A glass top stove is an electric range with a smooth, flat glass top. The burners heat up and cook like a standard electric stove, but the flat surface makes cleaning significantly easier. The Whirlpool models come in small, medium and large sizes and are available in various finishes. Along with cost, efficiency and capacity, the safety of the range must be a deciding factor. All Whirlpool ranges are available with several standard safety features.
  1. Anti-Tip Bracket

    • All ranges, no matter the manufacturer, have the potential to tip over if not secured. This situation can lead to serious injury or even death for both children and adults. To protect against this, all Whirlpool ranges come with an anti-tip bracket that is installed on the floor behind the range. The back foot of the range will sit under the bracket, securing the range in place. If renovations are done and the range is moved, this bracket must be removed and reinstalled.

    Safety Plugs

    • All appliances manufactured by Whirlpool come equipped with a three-pronged plug. The third prong, unlike older two-pronged plugs, creates a path to the ground, so no electrical current can travel anywhere but within the circuit. This style of plug protects against shocks and electrocution and works with modern ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlets that are specially designed for electrical safety.

    Oven Control Lockout

    • Oven control lockout is a safety feature found on all glass top Whirlpool ranges and is especially useful in homes with young children. This feature disables all control panel pads, preventing use of the oven until it is turned off. In this mode, only the clock set button and oven light will function. This feature is activated by the push of a button and requires pressure for a minimum of three seconds to be activated or deactivated.

    Automatic Shutoff

    • A 12-hour shutoff function is an automatic shutoff system that will turn off the oven after any cleaning or cooking task. This feature increases protection against fire. The function is started and stopped by pressing the “Start Time” button for approximately five seconds. Most models will display a scroll along the display indicating that the 12 hour function is on or off when the button is pressed.
