Purchase outlet plugs at a hardware or convenience store. Check that the plugs will fit into your specific outlet; for example, purchase a two-prong plug for a two-prong outlet and a three-prong plug for a three-prong outlet.
Place the plugs into the outlet when the outlet is not in use. Take them out when you will be using the outlet.
Replace the plugs if they become worn out or if one of the prongs breaks off; loose plugs can be easier for kids to remove.
Shut the power off to the particular outlet or circuit that you are working on. Even a minor adjustment on the outlet, such as installing a cover, can cause an electric shock.
Unscrew and remove the existing cover if one exists. Screws are usually located on the top and bottom of the cover, though there may be one in the center as well.
Place the cover on the outlet. Covers are available that cover the entirety of the protruding outlet, which resemble a rectangle shaped box or you may cover just the face of the outlet. Tighten the screws usually located on the top and bottom of the cover.
Turn the power to the outlet back on.
