How to Install a Barrel Bolt on a Metal Door

The proper installation of a barrel bolt requires the correct type of fasteners. Each type of threaded fastener -- screws and bolts -- is designed to hold in specific type of material. For example, a wood screw has coarse threads that are designed to provide holding power in all types of wood. To install a barrel bolt on a metal door, a fastener must have the correct type of threads to hold the thin material. The barrel bolt has the ability to self-drill a hole in the metal, and this will ensure the hole is the correct size and will provide the most holding power for the barrel bolt.

Instructions

    • 1

Slide the barrel bolt forward to its longest position. Lock it in position by pushing the bolt arm into the forward slot of the lock body. Slide the catch over the extended bolt.

    • 2

Place the assembled barrel bolt onto the interior surface of a metal door’s latch side with the catch sitting on the doorframe. Ensure the assembled body sits at a height that will be convenient for you.

    • 3

Set the tip of pencil inside one mounting hole -- located on the lock body. Move the pencil in a circular motion to mark the hole on the metal door. Remove the catch from the end of the barrel bolt. Set the catch aside.

    • 4

Run a #14 self-drilling countersink screw through the lock body at the marked hole with a screw gun. Ensure the screw holds the lock tight to the door. Set a level on top of the lock body and adjust it until the level reads level. Run one self-drilling screw through each hole of the body.

Slide the catch over the barrel bolt. Push the top of the catch tight to the bottom of the level. Run one 2-inch wood screw through each of the catch mounting holes with a screw gun to secure it to the doorframe. Slide the barrel bolt opened and closed multiple times to ensure it functions properly. Loosen the catch screws and adjust until the barrel bolt operates correctly. Tighten the screws when finished.
