How to Troubleshoot Chairlifts for Stairs

A chairlift for stairs is an automatic elevator-type machine that is installed in the stairway in your home to assist people who have trouble getting from one story to the next due to age, chronic condition or disability. The chair sits on a motorized track and moves slowly up or down the stair rail to get from one floor to the next. Minor performance problems with your chairlift can be quite inconvenient, but you can fix some of them yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Check your fuse box or circuit breakers if you have no power to the chairlift. Replace the fuse or reset the circuit breaker as necessary.

    • 2

Inspect the track for obstructions if the chair won’t go up and down smoothly.

    • 3

Ensure the seat is in the locked position if your model has a swivel seat and the chair won’t move up and down the track.

    • 4

Check the outlet that your charger is plugged into with a lamp or other appliance to ensure it’s live if the lift loses power often.

    • 5

Reset the slack cable safety device if your model is equipped with one and the unit won’t run because of a loose steel cable. Grasp the cable and lift it straight up to move the chair up slightly and reset the safety device. Set the cable back into the track.
