How to Remove Kwikset Two-Sided Key Deadbolts

Double-sided deadbolt locks, such as the Kwikset two-sided deadbolt, require a key on either side to lock and unlock the deadbolt. When you change or replace the lock, the many components can be overwhelming. Understanding where to start to properly extract the lock from the door will ensure that you can remove it without damaging the lock or the internal cylinder.

      Open the door and secure it with a door stop so you can work with it without it moving.

      Remove the screws securing the interior side of the lock cylinder. Remove both screws with a Phillips screwdriver. Pull the lock cylinder cover away from the lock assembly.

      Place one hand on the exterior portion of the lock to hold it in place. Remove the two black screws from the interior plate with a Phillips screwdriver. Pull the interior plate and lock components away from the door. The lock will slide straight back away from the door.

      Pull the exterior lock assembly away from the door. Pull the cover off first and set it aside, then grasp the exterior lock assembly and pull it out of the door.

      Remove the screws on the plate of the door that secures the latch, or the actual deadbolt slide, using a Phillips screwdriver. Set the screws and the plate aside, then pull the latch out of the inside of the door.
