How to Change an Electronic Combination Door Lock

Although electronic locks are hailed by many manufacturers as being safer than their keyhole predecessors, homeowners must use common sense and some security smarts to avoid tipping potential burglars off about the numbers used in their personal unlock codes. After a prolonged period of use, certain buttons may become noticeably soiled or worn, helping a savvy burglar narrow potential combination possibilities. To enhance and maintain home security, most lock companies recommend changing your code no less than once per year. Easily change the electronic combination on your door lock by following a few simple steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a screwdriver to remove the panel on your electronic lock, exposing the internal panel. Depending on the model, you may need only to set the lock to the open position and press the program button. The button is usually located on the power board but may differ from model to model. If you are not sure of the exact location of the programming button, consult the owner's manual of your electronic door lock.

    • 2

Enter your new electronic code by pressing the numbers on the lock's keypad. Select a combination of four to eight numbers as your new code, being careful to use numbers that you will remember but that will not be easily guessed by a potential intruder who knows you -- no pet names!

    • 3

Listen for a beep or other confirmation that the your new electronic key code has been accepted. If the electronic lock does not confirm a successful change in the combination, repeat Steps 1 and 2.

Enter your new electronic combination to ensure the lock and the code are working properly. The latch should engage and retract after you punch in the code. Close the access cover, securing it firmly to the electronic door lock.
