Venting of Flammable Storage Cabinets

Storing flammable liquids is always dangerous because of the risk of fire and the buildup of fumes inside the cabinet. That is why proper storage of these materials requires the use of a specially designed flammable storage cabinet. These cabinets have pre-installed ports that allow for ventilation. One port provides fresh air from the outside, while the other port removes any fumes from the cabinet. Connecting the vents only requires that you slide it in place and extend it through an exterior wall.

  • Power drill
  • Reciprocating saw (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Place the flammable storage cabinet into the final location. Moving it after connecting the vent is not possible.

    • 2

Locate the two circular vents on the sides of the cabinet, one for an air intake and the other for fume exhaust. Pull out the plug for the exhaust and insert the flame arrester plug supplied with the cabinet. Measure the diameter of the exhaust opening and purchase rigid metal duct in the same diameter.

    • 3

Measure the distance from the exhaust opening in the cabinet to the nearest exterior wall and cut a piece of duct to the same length using tin snips. Do not exceed 25 feet in length for the duct.

    • 4

Install a hole saw bit onto a drill that is the same diameter as the duct. Place the bit against the wall and cut an opening in it.

    • 5

Walk to the exterior of the home and cut out that side of the hole using a reciprocating saw or a hole saw. If the material is masonry use a hammer and a chisel.

    • 6

Insert the metal duct through the wall hole and into the opening of the flammable storage cabinet. As you push the duct in, the rubber gasket of the cabinet closes around it to seal it.

    • 7

Install a metal vent cap on the exterior of the home over the duct. Position the cap so the hood end faces down and secure it to the wall using the provided screws and a screwdriver.

    • 8

Caulk around the outside and the inside of the duct with high-temperature caulk.
