Slide the hurricane panels into their track or tracks and position them over the window. Make sure that the panels completely cover the window on all sides, overlapping the window by at least 6 inches all around. Set a carpenter's level on top of the tracks to ensure that they are straight. Hold the tracks in place with the help of an assistant and pull out the hurricane panel.
Mark the location of each attachment hole for the hurricane panel tracks. Remove the tracks and set them aside. Drill into each attachment hole using a drill bit that is appropriate for your exterior wall material, whether it is masonry, metal or wood/all-purpose. Make the holes 2 inches deep. Use a drill bit that is just smaller in its diameter than your installation screws.
Set a dollop of waterproof caulking in each drilled hole. Thread galvanized 3-inch screws that are appropriate for your exterior home material through a rubber washer. Set the tracks back on the wall and drill the screws into each hole halfway. Once all the screws are halfway installed and the tracks seem to be fine, tighten the screws completely to finish the installation. Slide the hurricane panel back in place to make sure that the installation will operate smoothly. Make any adjustments necessary for a perfect fit.
