How to Remove the Drive Pins From a Deadbolt

Removing the pins from your deadbolt lock enables you to install new pins to rekey the lock. After you have rekeyed the lock, any keys used previously will no longer lock or unlock the deadbolt. Visit your local hardware store to find a rekeying kit that is made for your model deadbolt lock. The rekeying kit comes with the specialized lock tools you need to take the lock apart, as well as color-coded replacement pins and new keys.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the door and place a heavy object in the way, such as a box, so the door cannot close while you are working. Back out the screws on the side of the deadbolt assembly that sits inside your house, turning the screws counterclockwise until they come out of the lock.

    • 2

Pull off the cover from the side of the lock assembly where you removed the screws. Push through the opening on the inside of the door to slide the other part of the lock assembly out of the door.

    • 3

Push on the lock cylinder from the keyhole, removing it from the deadbolt housing. Fit the open end of the retainer ring tool around the retaining ring, located on the cylinder just behind the keyhole. Push the tool toward the keyhole, removing the retaining ring from the lock cylinder.

    • 4

Slide the old key into the lock cylinder’s keyhole, and turn the key a quarter revolution. Insert the follower tool into the end of the cylinder opposite the keyhole, while at the same time pulling on the key to remove the plug from the cylinder.

    • 5

Remove the old pins from the lock’s plug by turning it over, dumping the pins out. Insert the replacement pins with tweezers, following the configuration included in the rekeying kit’s manual. Reassemble the lock by reversing the steps used to take it apart.
