How Does a Handheld Bath Spray Work?

Handheld bath sprays come in a variety of designs, but there are two main types. This bathroom accessory serves many different needs, from making bathing easier for those who are disabled to revamping the look of a shower stall. The way a handheld bath spray works depends on its type, but they all allow the flow of water from a tub spout or shower head to be re-directed.
  1. Types

    • There are two types of handheld bath sprays: those that attach to or replace the shower head, and those that attach to the tub's faucet spout. Sprayers that connect to shower heads can be used in combination tubs with a shower, or in stand-alone shower stalls. Handheld sprayers, which work by being connected to a tub faucet, can only be used in tubs. These sprayers are usually very basic, with few or no added functions. Shower head sprayers can be basic as well, but they often have a variety of additional features, such as water massage capability, variable flow controls and the ability to be hooked onto the wall and used as a traditional shower head.

    Functionality

    • To install a bath spray that attaches to the shower head, unscrew the old shower head and replace it with the bath spray. There's usually a hook included with the kit so the hose can be attached to the shower wall. When the tub or shower faucet is turned on, water can then flow out of the sprayer's head. If the design allows, the user may be able to alter the force and direction of the water flow. Handheld bath sprays that attach to the tub's faucet are even easier to install. One end of the sprayer contains the head, while the opposite end includes a rubber cup that fits directly over the faucet. The cup is gently worked onto the faucet, and water flows out of the head when it's turned on.

    Benefits

    • Sprayers are very useful for those with limited mobility and disabilities, but who want to be able to shower and bathe independently. Some handheld bath spray models are made just for the purpose of helping those who are physically impaired. In addition, handheld bath sprays can also make shampooing, bathing pets and rinsing your back easier. Children who want to shower may also find using a handheld bath spray beneficial, since using a traditional shower head may not be feasible due to their height.

    Costs

    • Handheld bath sprays are relatively affordable, with some models costing less than $20 as of 2011. They can be purchased from pharmacies, online retailers and medical equipment suppliers, plus home improvement, hardware and big-box discount stores. Models that attach to the bathtub's faucet are generally less expensive than those that attach to the shower head.
