Help for My Designers Edge Motion Detector That Stays On

Designers Edge outdoor motion detectors work with security lights to cast a beam of bright light on anyone trying to move around your house. Having the light remain on or repeatedly activate is likely to drive a wedge between you and your neighbors -- no one likes to sleep with light pouring through the window. In many cases, the cause of the problem is easy to identify and solve.
  1. Check the Direction

    • Designers Edge motion sensors can be pointed in any direction to detect motion in a particular area. Look up at the sensor and check that the semi-transparent window on the front of the sensor is facing the correct way. Strong winds can blow the sensor off course and cause it to pick up motion from passing pedestrians, cars or other moving objects.

    Check the Surroundings

    • Branches from trees hanging in front of the sensor could cause the light to activate in the wind. Trim any overgrown plants near the sensor and look out for moving objects in the garden that could potentially set off the light. Washing lines, hammocks and other garden furniture are all likely to interfere with the sensor. Swimming pools, large windows and other reflective surfaces are also a common cause of accidental activation.

    Clean the Sensor

    • Dirt, moss and other natural deposits form on the semi-transparent panel under certain conditions. Try to get up to the sensor every few years to clean away any obstructions to the sensor's "sight" with a damp, soapy cloth. Look for any corrosion in the sensor's wiring while you have access.

    Adjust the Settings

    • The sensor's sensitivity to motion can be adjusted through a set of controls inside the unit. Reduce the sensitivity level if the sensor picks up movement outside your property or reacts to the motion of trees or plants under a gentle breeze. Have an electrician inspect the wiring if the light remains on constantly after taking this action.
